| Obverse description | The obverse bears the fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, portrayed at approximately 77 years of age, designed by Susanna Blunt. The St. Lawrence Seaway, opened in 1959 after decades of diplomatic friction between Canada and the United States over construction rights and toll structures, fundamentally redirected Great Lakes shipping away from U.S. rail networks. The joint infrastructure project required flooding several communities in the upper St. Lawrence valley — entire towns were relocated before the gates closed.
This issue belongs to the RCM's recurring large-format .9999 fine silver commemorative program, which has produced dozens of thematic pieces annually since the early 2000s. Mintage figures for this type are typically low and collector-driven, with negligible secondary market circulation.
