This piece belongs to the Royal Canadian Mint's platinum wildlife series, which launched in 1990 as one of the first government-issued platinum bullion programs in the world — a direct response to the Soviet Norilsk Nickel monopoly on platinum refining that made the metal politically charged in Western markets. Canada's Lac des Îles deposit in Ontario gave the RCM a domestic platinum source independent of that supply chain, making the series commercially and geopolitically viable.
The pronghorn is native to the interior plains of North America and is, by most measures, the fastest land animal in the Western Hemisphere.
