Issued as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing provincial and territorial commemorative program, this piece marks the 150th anniversary of Manitoba's entry into Confederation — a moment complicated by the Red River Resistance of 1869–70, during which Louis Riel's provisional government negotiated the terms that brought the province in. Ottawa's willingness to grant Manitoba provincial status, rather than territorial status, was a direct concession extracted through that conflict.
