Additional information

Canada's declaration of war on September 10, 1939 — a full week after Britain's — was deliberate. Prime Minister Mackenzie King insisted on a separate parliamentary vote, asserting that Canada entered as an autonomous nation rather than automatically following the Crown. It was a constitutional point he had been building toward since the Statute of Westminster in 1931, and the war gave him the occasion to make it unambiguously.

The .9999 fineness is notable for a coin of this diameter; the RCM had by this period moved aggressively toward four-nines silver for its commemorative program, distinguishing these issues from the .925 standard of earlier decades.
