Perth Mint's kilogram silver issues in this lunar series occupy a peculiar commercial niche — legal tender face values set absurdly below melt, produced almost exclusively for the bullion and collector market rather than any realistic monetary function. The 2017 Rooster completes the second full twelve-year Lunar cycle for Perth, the first having launched in 1996. Unlike the Royal Australian Mint's competing lunar program, Perth's series has maintained uninterrupted annual production with consistent sizing across the kilogram format.
The .9999 fineness — four nines — became Perth's house standard for this series, a purity benchmark that requires additional refining steps compared to the more common .999 specification.
