Additional information

Issued to mark the turn of the millennium, this 10-kilogram piece is among the largest gold coins ever produced by the People's Bank of China and was struck in mintages so restricted that individual pieces were effectively state gifts rather than market instruments. The 180mm diameter required purpose-built striking equipment at the Shanghai Mint.

At the time of issue, China's gold coin program was still maturing its international distribution network, and pieces of this scale rarely left official channels through conventional numismatic dealers.
