Cambodia's Indochinese tiger population collapsed so completely that the subspecies is now considered functionally extinct in the country — the last confirmed wild sighting dates to 2007. The National Bank of Cambodia has periodically issued wildlife conservation coins since the 1990s, a program that predates the Royal Mint and Pobjoy partnerships that later dominated Southeast Asian numismatic commemoratives.

The .9999 fineness places this outside Cambodia's older gold issues, which rarely exceeded .900.
