| Additional information |
Equatorial Guinea's gold commemorative program in the early 1990s was essentially a revenue exercise — the country had no meaningful domestic coin market and these issues were produced entirely for export to European and American collectors. The elephant series rode the wave of CITES-era conservation sentiment following the 1989 ivory trade ban, which had made the African elephant an internationally bankable subject.
Equatorial Guinea is not a member of the CFA franc zone — it uses the Central African CFA franc through CEMAC, having joined only in 1985 after switching from the ekwele. Denominating a collector gold piece in francs CFA carried no monetary function whatsoever.
