The "Yuan Fu" series translates loosely as "auspicious yuan" and was introduced by the People's Bank of China as a small-format silver gift issue aimed squarely at the domestic retail market during the Lunar New Year season. The 2016 release coincided with the Year of the Monkey. These were sold through state-controlled banking channels in sealed gift packaging, and most examples have never been removed from their original holders.
