Additional information

The Chinese Panda series launched in 1982 as part of a deliberate strategy to compete in the international bullion and collector market — the State Council authorized the program explicitly to generate foreign currency reserves. By 2007, the series had accumulated enough collector momentum that the mint issued this commemorative marking its own quarter-century run, an unusual case of a bullion program celebrating its own commercial longevity.

The 3 Yuan denomination is an oddity: not a standard bullion face value, assigned specifically to this commemorative weight class rather than any monetary function.
