Obverse description The crowned royal arms of Portugal occupy the central field, presenting the traditional escutcheon charged with five quinas arranged in cross formation, each bearing five bezants, and surrounded by a bordure of seven castles. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finials. Four decorative ornaments — alternating trefoils and cross-pattée motifs — are symmetrically disposed at the cardinal points within the inner beaded circle, lending the composition a formal heraldic character. The outer legend reads IOANNES V D G P ET ALG REX in crisp upright Latin capitals, identifying the issuer as João V, King of Portugal and the Algarves.
