| Obverse description | Central field features four Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform pattern around a central rayed sun motif: 嗣德寶通 (Tự Đức Bảo Thông), reading the reign title of Emperor Tự Đức and the monetary designation. The four characters are positioned at the cardinal points — 嗣 (top right), 通 (right), 德 (bottom), 寶 (left) — rendered in bold relief in the classical Sino-Vietnamese script. The coin is bordered by a prominent reeded or milled rim, and the overall design follows the traditional Vietnamese imperial cash-coin aesthetic adapted to a larger silver denomination. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a sinuous imperial dragon in high relief, rendered in the Vietnamese court style of the Nguyễn dynasty. The dragon is shown writhing dynamically across the entire field, with a scaled body, clawed feet, horned head facing left, and flame-like appendages emanating from its limbs and spine. The naturalistic yet stylized execution is consistent with Nguyễn imperial iconography, symbolizing imperial authority and sovereignty. The design fills the coin to the reeded border, leaving little open field. |
