| Obverse description | Central field bears four large Chữ Nôm characters arranged in cruciform fashion reading 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo), the reign title and monetary inscription of Emperor Tự Đức. A stylized eight-petalled rosette occupies the centre where the characters intersect. The field is framed by a decorative border of overlapping wave or cloud motifs, itself enclosed by a beaded outer rim. |
