Minh Mạng's gold coinage of the 1830s was produced at the Huế Board of Works mint under direct imperial supervision, with output tightly controlled as gifts, court payments, and ceremonial distributions rather than general commerce. These pieces rarely passed through ordinary hands.

KM#227 corresponds to Minh Mạng's sustained effort to codify a Vietnamese imperial monetary identity distinct from Chinese precedent, part of the same administrative program that reorganized provincial governance and standardized weights across the empire in 1832.
