Kazakhstan's first national currency series, introduced in November 1993, replaced the Soviet ruble in a single-day swap operation — citizens had three days to exchange a strictly limited sum, after which old rubles became worthless. The tenge launch was kept secret until the last possible moment to prevent capital flight and speculative hoarding ahead of the changeover.

Harrison & Sons printed the entire inaugural series. The 3 tenge sits at an unusual denomination — one rarely seen in modern currency systems — retained largely to ease the psychological transition from ruble-denomination habits.
