Dushanbe was a village of fewer than 600 people when Soviet planners designated it the capital of the Tajik SSR in 1924, renaming it Stalinabad from 1929 until de-Stalinization restored its original name in 1961. This coin was struck during the early years of Tajikistan's silver commemorative program, launched after the somoni replaced the Tajik ruble in 2000 — a currency reform that itself marked the first time Tajikistan had issued a distinctly national coinage since independence in 1991.
