Reverse description Large numeral '3' dominates the central field, enclosed within an ornate lobed cartouche formed by a beaded inner border and stylised floral corner ornaments in a traditional Central Asian decorative style. The currency name СОМОНӢ is inscribed below the numeral in Cyrillic capital letters, with the four-digit year of issue centred beneath it, all contained within the decorative framework.

Additional information

Tajikistan introduced the somoni as its national currency in 2000, replacing the Tajik ruble at a rate of 1000:1 following years of post-Soviet hyperinflation and a brutal civil war that had effectively collapsed the country's monetary infrastructure through most of the 1990s. The currency was named after Ismoil Somoni, the 9th-century Samanid ruler considered a founding figure of Tajik national identity.

The 3-somoni denomination is unusual by international standards — tri-value coins are rare in modern circulation series and reflect a gap in practical purchasing power that smaller denominations could not efficiently bridge by the late 2010s.
