Luxembourg's 3 sols issue of 1775 belongs to the final decade of Maria Theresa's reign, when the Austrian Netherlands — of which Luxembourg formed the southernmost province — were undergoing fiscal pressure from the costly Seven Years' War aftermath and the empress's own centralizing monetary reforms. Billon coinage of this type circulated alongside French sols in the border markets, and the metal's low silver content was an explicit administrative choice to discourage hoarding.
The Weiller and Vanhoudt references each treat this type from slightly different cataloging traditions, which accounts for the multiplicity of reference numbers for what is a single, administratively straightforward issue.
