Additional information

Transnistria — the narrow strip of territory between the Dniester River and Ukraine — has operated as an unrecognized state since its 1992 war of secession from Moldova, backed militarily by Russia's 14th Army. The Tiraspol series of gold issues was struck primarily for the collector export market, since no internationally recognized banking system accepts Transnistrian instruments. The coins are legal tender by local decree, a designation that carries little practical weight outside the republic's own borders.

KM#97 is part of a broader commemorative program launched by the Transnistrian Republican Bank to assert institutional legitimacy through numismatic output — a pattern common among contested or post-Soviet micro-states.
