Part of the Bank of Russia's long-running series commemorating monasteries and convents of the Orthodox Church, this issue documents the Saint John Nunnery in Saint Petersburg — founded in 1900–1901 under the direct patronage of John of Kronstadt, the enormously influential priest who died in 1908 and was canonized in 1990. The convent was suppressed during the Soviet period and its buildings repurposed; serious restoration only resumed in the 1990s, making the 2002 issue something of a timely acknowledgment of that recovery.
