This piece belongs to Russia's long-running "Monuments of Architecture" commemorative series, issued through the late 1990s as the Bank of Russia leaned heavily on regional cultural subjects to fill its annual silver program. The Monument of Friendship in Ufa, Bashkortostan, was erected in 1957 to mark the 400th anniversary of the voluntary unification of Bashkiria with the Russian state — a political milestone Moscow had obvious interest in commemorating repeatedly, and in multiple media.
The 400th anniversary year saw a wave of such monuments across the region. Whether the unification was truly voluntary remains a contested point among Bashkir historians.
