The Trinity-Sergius Lavra, located in Sergiev Posad roughly 70 kilometers northeast of Moscow, is the most important monastic complex in Russia and the spiritual seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was founded by Sergius of Radonezh around 1337, and Sergius himself reportedly blessed Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380 — the first major Russian victory over the Golden Horde. The monastery survived a sixteen-month Polish-Lithuanian siege between 1608 and 1610 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
The colored enamel application on this issue is a collector-market addition, not part of the official struck design, applied after minting by a third-party contractor under CBR licensing arrangements common to this commemorative series.
