| Obverse description | At centre, the State Emblem of the Bank of Russia — a double-headed eagle with wings lowered — occupies the field within a beaded circle. The legend БАНК РОССИИ (BANK OF RUSSIA) arcs in a semicircle beneath the eagle. Along the outer rim, the denomination ТРИ РУБЛЯ (THREE ROUBLES) is inscribed at the top and the year of issue 2006 at the bottom. To the left of the beaded circle, the alloy designation and fineness Ag 925 are indicated; to the right, the fine metal content in grams and the mintmark of the Moscow Mint (ММД) appear. |

This coin commemorates the 165th anniversary of Sberbank, the savings institution founded by Nicholas I in 1841 as the State Savings Banks — Russia's first formalized public deposit system. The original St. Petersburg branch opened on March 1, 1842, and recorded its very first depositor that day: a court counselor named Nikolai Antonovich Kristofari, who deposited 10 silver roubles. That transaction was meticulously documented and survives in Russian financial archives.
