Russia and the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations on October 2, 1949 — the day after the PRC's founding proclamation. This coin marks the 50th anniversary of that date, issued at a moment when Moscow and Beijing were actively rehabilitating a relationship that had fractured badly during the Sino-Soviet split of the early 1960s. By 1999, the two governments had signed a joint declaration on a "strategic partnership of equality," giving the anniversary real political weight rather than ceremonial convenience.
