Reverse description The reverse commemorates the 50th anniversary of Russo-Chinese diplomatic relations through a richly detailed bilateral composition. To the left, the Spasskaya Tower and walls of the Moscow Kremlin are rendered in fine relief, while to the right a traditional Chinese imperial palace structure, referencing the Forbidden City, is depicted against stylized clouds and a rising sun with radiating rays in the upper field. At the centre, two interlocking ovals or rings form a shield-like cartouche bearing the bold numerals '50' above the Cyrillic word ЛЕТ (Years). The commemorative inscription УСТАНОВЛЕНИЯ ДИПЛОМАТИЧЕСКИХ ОТНОШЕНИЙ С КНР (Of the Establishing of Diplomatic Relations with the PRC) is engraved in four lines across the lower field. The entire design is struck in proof with contrasting frosted relief against a deeply mirrored background.

Additional information

Russia and the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations on October 2, 1949 — the day after the PRC's founding proclamation. This coin marks the 50th anniversary of that date, issued at a moment when Moscow and Beijing were actively rehabilitating a relationship that had fractured badly during the Sino-Soviet split of the early 1960s. By 1999, the two governments had signed a joint declaration on a "strategic partnership of equality," giving the anniversary real political weight rather than ceremonial convenience.
