Additional information

Vovnushki is a pair of medieval defensive towers in Ingushetia, built by the Ozdoev clan and perched on ridgelines in the Caucasus Mountains above the Assа River gorge. The towers survived centuries of inter-clan warfare intact, and in 2008 — just two years before this coin was issued — the site was nominated as part of Russia's submission to UNESCO's World Heritage List alongside other Ingush tower complexes.

The Bank of Russia's regional architectural series has documented dozens of such monuments, but the Caucasian tower entries are among the more historically charged, issued during a period of active federal reconciliation efforts in the North Caucasus republics following the conflicts of the 1990s and early 2000s.
