Additional information

The Battle of Molodi in July–August 1572 was arguably the most consequential engagement in Russian history that most people have never heard of. A Crimean Tatar force estimated at 40,000–120,000 men under Khan Devlet I Giray — fresh from burning Moscow the previous year — was destroyed by Mikhail Vorotynsky's army using a mobile field fortification called a gulyay-gorod. The defeat ended Tatar aspirations of permanently subjugating Russia and reversing the fall of Kazan.

The coin was issued as part of Russia's ongoing commemorative program marking significant military victories in national history, a series that accelerated considerably after 2014.
