This coin is one of several issued by the Bank of Russia in 1999 to commemorate the centenary of Alexander Glazunov's ballet Raymonda, which premiered at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on January 7, 1898. Glazunov composed the score in under a year at the urging of choreographer Marius Petipa, who had already developed the libretto before a single note was written — an unusual reversal of the normal creative process.
