The Kurchatov Institute in Moscow was the Soviet Union's primary nuclear weapons research facility, established in 1943 under Igor Kurchatov himself to develop an atomic bomb in direct response to intelligence reports about the Manhattan Project. It produced the USSR's first successful nuclear device in 1949. Today the institute operates Russia's only tokamak fusion reactor and remains an active research body — the coin commemorates its 80th anniversary.
