Vneshtorgbank's military trade cheques were a parallel currency system used by Soviet armed forces personnel serving abroad — a mechanism for converting hard-currency entitlements into controlled purchasing power without exposing the ruble to foreign exchange pressures. The series came in two distinct streams: "D" series for officers and "Zh" series for ratings, each restricted to specific retail outlets. This 3-rouble denomination sits in the lower tier of the officer series.
These cheques were redeemable at Voenторг stores, not at civilian Beryozka hard-currency shops — a distinction that mattered enormously to the holder at the time.
