| Additional information |
Kuskovo was the summer estate of Count Pyotr Sheremetev, built in the 1750s on land the Sheremetev family had held since the 16th century. At its peak the estate hosted outdoor theatrical performances attended by tens of thousands — serfs trained as musicians and actors formed one of the most celebrated private theatre companies in imperial Russia. The count reportedly spent ruinous sums on entertainments designed to rival Versailles.
This issue belongs to the Bank of Russia's long-running architectural monuments series, which began in 1993 and drew heavily on estate and ecclesiastical subjects through the late 1990s. Mintages for individual issues in this period were tightly capped, typically under 15,000 pieces.
