Kikoriki — known in Russia as Smeshariki — is a domestic animated franchise launched in 2003 that became one of the most commercially successful children's properties in post-Soviet Russian media. The Bank of Russia has issued collector coins tied to Russian animation properties with some regularity, using the series partly to assert the cultural legitimacy of homegrown content alongside Western franchises that dominated the market after 1991.
