Issued under the Bank of Russia's long-running colored commemorative program, this piece marks Lake Baikal — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and home to roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. The colored enamel application was applied post-strike at the Moscow Mint, a technique Russia began deploying on collector silvers in the early 2000s.
Baikal sits in a seismically active rift zone and is estimated at 25–30 million years old, making it the world's oldest extant lake by a considerable margin.
