| Reverse description | A dynamic commemorative composition depicting the Soviet defense of Moscow in 1941. In the foreground, angular antitank obstacles (Czech hedgehogs) are prominently displayed, while a column of marching soldiers advances across the middle ground. A barrage balloon floats in the upper field, and the crenellated walls and towers of the Moscow Kremlin, including the distinctive Spasskaya Tower, are visible in the background. The encircling legend records the fiftieth anniversary of the defeat of German fascist forces near Moscow, with the dual dates '1941' and '1991' flanking the lower portion of the design. |

Issued in the final months of the Soviet Union's existence — the August coup attempt came just weeks after this coin's release, and the USSR formally dissolved in December 1991 — this commemorative marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Moscow, the first major German defeat on the Eastern Front. Soviet forces under Zhukov halted Army Group Centre within sight of the city in December 1941, a reversal that ended any realistic prospect of German victory in a single campaign season.
