Obverse description The Weimar Republic eagle displayed in the center of the field, wings spread downward with head turned to the right, rendered in a bold, modernist relief style. The circumferential legend reads DEUTSCHES REICH above and 3 REICHSMARK below, separated by raised dots, running along the inner border of the coin.

Reverse description Left-facing draped bust of the German playwright and philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing occupying the upper portion of the field, his hair tied at the nape in 18th-century fashion. The commemorative dates 1729 and 1929, marking the bicentenary of his birth, are inscribed vertically to the left and right of the portrait respectively. Below the bust, in two lines, the abbreviated name GOTTH.EPHRAIM LESSING is incused in block capitals. The mint mark appears at the bottom of the field beneath the name.
