Azerbaijan redenominated its currency in 2006, replacing the old manat at a rate of 5,000 to 1 and introducing a modern decimal system — the qəpik being its fractional unit. The 3 qəpik denomination is something of an oddity among its peers; most post-Soviet decimal systems settled on the familiar 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 structure, making a 3-unit coin a deliberate and somewhat uncommon choice for the region.
