The Treaty of Utrecht, signed in 1713, ended the War of the Spanish Succession and formally ceded Gibraltar to Britain in perpetuity — a transfer Spain has contested ever since. The 300th anniversary in 2013 was a pointed occasion for Gibraltar to mark the event on coinage, a deliberate act of self-assertion during a period of renewed diplomatic friction with Madrid over border controls and fishing rights.
