Verdala's tenure as Grand Master coincided with sustained Ottoman pressure on Malta following the Great Siege of 1565, and his administration required constant maintenance of the island's defenses and garrison pay. Small copper issues like this one filled the chronic shortage of low-denomination coinage that plagued the Order throughout the sixteenth century — Maltese commerce ran heavily on fractional values that larger silver issues simply couldn't serve. Verdala himself was later appointed a Cardinal by Sixtus V in 1587, an unusual honor for a sitting Grand Master.
