Reverse description The reverse displays a large, bold numeral '3' occupying the central field, denoting the denomination of three Piccioli. The numeral is rendered in a strong, upright style characteristic of hammered coinage of the period. A partial beaded or dotted inner border frames the design, with the abbreviated Latin legend 'M. M. HOSPITALI. HIERV' disposed around the periphery, referencing the Grand Master of the Hospital of Jerusalem. The flan is irregular and slightly worn, consistent with the hammered copper coinage of the Order of St. John during the mid-17th century.

Additional information

Giovanni Paolo Lascaris de Castellar's reign over the Order of St. John in Malta lasted over two decades, making him one of the longer-serving Grand Masters of the seventeenth century. The piccioli denominations were the workhorse coinage of everyday Maltese commerce — bought bread, paid ferrymen, settled small debts — while the Order's silver and gold circulated in more rarefied transactions. Copper issues from this reign survive in widely varying states, having actually done the work coinage is meant to do.
