Rostock retained the right to strike its own municipal coinage well into the nineteenth century, an anachronism even by German standards. By 1859, the city's independent minting authority was already a relic — German monetary unification was less than a decade away, and small copper pfennig issues like this one were among the last gasps of the old particularist system before the North German Confederation swept it aside.
