Obverse description Ornate crowned interlaced cypher of the Archbishop-Elector Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein occupies the central field, rendered in an elaborate Baroque calligraphic style. Beneath the cypher, a sword and a crozier are crossed, symbolizing the dual secular and ecclesiastical authority of the issuer. A wheel — the heraldic emblem of the Archbishopric of Mainz — appears at the base of the design. The obverse bears no surrounding legend, with the crowned monogram serving as the sole identification of the issuing authority.
