H.M.S. Argus was a British Royal Navy vessel that issued its own small-denomination scrip for use among crew — a practice that arose when ships operated far from shore pay offices and sailors needed a means of settling debts or purchases within the mess. These shipboard notes are among the rarest class of British military ephemera, produced in tiny quantities for a closed circulation of perhaps a few hundred men at most.
