| Obverse description | Bare-headed left-facing effigy of King George VI after the portrait by Thomas Humphrey Paget, whose initials 'HP' appear below the truncation. A continuous Latin legend encircles the bust, notably omitting the 'IND:IMP' (Emperor of India) title following Indian independence in 1948. The portrait presents the king in a dignified, unadorned style consistent with the post-war coinage reform series. The field is flat and unadorned, with the legend distributed evenly around the periphery. |

The removal of "IND:IMP" — Indiae Imperator, Emperor of India — from the royal title followed Indian independence in August 1947 and the subsequent Indian Republic declaration in 1950. George VI formally relinquished the Imperial title in 1948, making this the first threepence type to circulate without it. The king died in February 1952, meaning production of this type spanned only four calendar years and was cut short rather than superseded.
