Obverse description Uncrowned, bare-headed effigy of King George VI facing left, modelled by Thomas Humphrey Paget, with the engraver's initials HP visible at the truncation of the neck. The legend KING GEORGE THE SIXTH runs clockwise around the periphery in raised Latin capitals, closely bordered by a continuous beaded rim.

Reverse description Central device comprises two crossed patu — traditional Māori short-handled striking weapons — rendered in the style of Māori carving art, as designed by George Kruger Gray. The denomination 3d appears above the patu in the upper field, flanked by the legend NEW·ZEALAND to either side, with the date centred below the crossed weapons, all enclosed within a beaded rim.
