| Additional information |
This piece is a mule — struck with obverse and reverse dies that were not intended to be paired. New Zealand's coinage was produced at the Royal Mint through this period, and die mismatches of this kind typically result from storage errors or deliberate substitution during proof or specimen runs rather than standard production. The 1st portrait of Elizabeth II, by Mary Gillick, was officially superseded on New Zealand coinage in 1966, making any 1965-dated piece with die anomalies a transitional curiosity at the margin of the series.
