Dutch naval and military personnel who escaped to Australia following the fall of the Netherlands East Indies in early 1942 found themselves stationed far from any Dutch banking infrastructure. The Nederlands Officieren Club in Australië issued small-denomination scrip to facilitate purchases within the club — a practical workaround for officers who held Dutch guilder accounts but operated in an Australian pound economy.
Three-penny scrip of this type was denominated to align with Australian coinage values, not Dutch currency, which tells you something about how thoroughly these men had adapted to local conditions.
