Additional information

Patterns struck for the Bavarian 3 Mark denomination in 1913 were never approved for circulation, leaving Louis III — who had assumed the regency from his mentally incapacitated father Otto only the previous year — without a confirmed coinage identity until later issues. The political awkwardness of the transition, with Otto technically remaining king until 1913's formal deposition, complicated the authorization process for new portrait coinage.

Schaaf's reference documents only a handful of confirmed specimens from this die pairing.
