| Obverse description | Right-facing bearded bust of Friedrich the Wise, Elector of Saxony and Protector of Martin Luther, rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail including a fur-trimmed garment and elaborate curled beard. The effigy is set within a beaded inner circle. The legend arcing around the upper field reads EIN FESTE BVRG IST VNSER GOTT, a reference to Luther's famous hymn, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Reformation. The name FRIEDRICH / DER WEISE appears in the field flanking the portrait, and the dual dates 1517 and 1917 are placed in the lower exergual area, marking the Reformation centenary. |
