Frederik IV struck these large silver pieces during a period of post-war fiscal strain following Denmark's costly involvement in the Great Northern War, which ended in 1720. The crown had emerged from that conflict without the territorial gains it sought, and recoinage efforts through the mid-1720s were partly an attempt to reassert monetary credibility after years of wartime financial pressure.
The substantial silver content and sheer mass of the flan demanded careful preparation, and surviving examples frequently show flow lines or uneven luster consistent with the striking challenges that plagued large-diameter Danish issues of this decade.
