Maximilian III Joseph inherited Bavaria in 1745 encumbered by the catastrophic debts his father Karl Albrecht had accumulated chasing the imperial title — a gamble that briefly made a Wittelsbach Holy Roman Emperor but nearly bankrupted the electorate. The small silver issues of his reign circulated heavily across a territory still recovering from Austrian occupation during the War of the Austrian Succession, and surviving examples with any legible detail are accordingly scarce.
