Leopold Eberhard ruled Montbéliard under constant legal challenge — the Württemberg line disputed his succession, and his administration was never fully secure. He struck coinage aggressively in the early eighteenth century, arguably to assert administrative legitimacy as much as to meet commercial need. The 1710 issue falls squarely in that contentious middle period of his rule.
The Klein Möller and Ebner references diverge slightly on die classifications for this type, suggesting more than one working die was in use.
